Four tips to find the best therapist for you

Congratulations for considering therapy! When you embark on this journey, you will be on your way to feeling better and achieving more than you ever thought possible.  But we know it can feel intimidating to open up to a stranger. That’s why it’s crucial to find a therapist who is a good fit for you: someone you feel comfortable talking to about your fears, anxieties, and challenges. When you find a therapist who is the right match, it can feel like talking to an old friend who supports and yet also challenges you in all the ways you need.

Here are four tips:

  1. What does your gut tell you? You need to trust this person. If you don’t trust them or feel comfortable with them, then therapy won’t work.
  2. If you are meeting in-person, what does their office space say about them?  You should feel comfortable in the space.
  3. Do you feel heard?  If your therapist does not respond to you in a way that makes you feel heard and understood, it may not be a good match.
  4. Do you feel supported? Your therapist should validate your emotions while also guiding you to view your situation from a new perspective. Although this can sometimes be challenging, it’s a natural part of the process. However, you should never feel belittled or judged during therapy.
More than 90% of our clients are satisfied with their therapist. But if it turns out that your therapist is not the right match, don’t feel discouraged! Please call us, and we can work with you to find a therapist who is a better fit.
