Empowering child and teen therapy
Our caring therapy for children and teens will drive positive behavior changes, foster resilience, and set your children up for success.
More children and teens are struggling with depression and anxiety
The mental health crisis among our children nationwide and in Ohio has risen to record numbers. Last year, 13% of teens ages 12 to 17 reported serious thoughts of suicide, and 42% of high school students say that they feel persistently sad.
20% of teens had at least one major depressive episode in the last year. Of those children who experienced a major depressive episode, over half did not receive treatment.
Today’s children and teens deal with many mental health challenges, including pressure caused by social media, academic pressures, questions about gender identity, parent separation or divorce, or trauma from gun violence. Kids often struggle to express their feelings to their parents, guardians or teachers, so they are often left with no trusted adult in their lives to give them advice.
Therapy for children and teens can change their lives
It is not an exaggeration to say that successful therapy can transform the lives of children and teens. Here’s why:
- Early Intervention Matters: Addressing emotional challenges early can prevent bigger issues down the road.
- Skill Building: During child and teen therapy, kids learn healthy coping strategies, emotional regulation, and communication skills.
- Growing Self-Esteem: In a supportive environment, children and teens feel heard and seen, allowing them to gain self-confidence.
- Strengthen Relationships: Improved emotional health leads to better interactions with family and friends.
- Lifelong Benefits: Early mental health support sets the foundation for a happy, resilient future.
Parents also often feel that a therapist is an unbiased, trusted advisor, enabling parents to feel supported.

Mindfully also offers specialized DBT Therapy for teens
If your teen has more serious emotional or behavioral challenges such as severe depression, self-harming behaviors, suicidal thoughts, or substance use, DBT Therapy may be the right solution for them.
Our expert-led DBT® therapy for teens creates a life worth living. Mindfully offers a fully adherent DBT® therapy program, also known as comprehensive DBT® therapy. This means that teens will participate in a weekly individual session and a weekly skills training group. They will also have access to their clinician for phone coaching outside their session and group time.
For a less-structured therapy approach, Mindfully offers DBT®-informed counseling. This still uses key modules from the comprehensive DBT® therapy, but the therapist will modify the treatment program according to your teen’s needs.
Frequently Asked Questions When Your Child Needs Therapy
- If you have determined that your child or teen needs to see a therapist, this is a very positive first step! You may have a few questions about the process:
- How should I tell my child about going to therapy?
Start by being open and honest with them, without judgment or accusations. - Will I meet with my child’s therapist first?
Yes, as the child or teen’s guardian, you will typically meet with the therapist first. (Note: School-based therapy may be set up differently.) - Will the therapist keep me updated on my child’s progress?
For older children, what is said between the child and the therapist is kept confidential so that the child can establish a trusting relationship with the therapist. - What if my child doesn’t like the therapist?
Sometimes it may take a few sessions for your child to “click” with the therapist. This may especially be true if your child is reluctant to go to therapy. However, if the therapist is not a good fit, don’t be discouraged – that happens! Just call the main office and explain the situation. Our front office administrator will be happy to schedule your child with someone else. - What can I do to support my child?
Promise your child that you will enable them to make all their therapy appointments. Remember that online therapy is an option too whenever your child does not have transportation to get them to their in-person sessions.
