FAQs about Mindfully's DBT Skills Classes
What is DBT® Therapy?
Developed by Marsha Linehan , PhD. in the early 1990’s, DBT® (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) has become an evidence-based treatment and the treatment of choice for those who suffer from chronic suicidal behaviors and Borderline Personality Disorder. Over the course of time, DBT has been researched and found to be empirically demonstrated through 9 randomized-control trial (RCT’s) to treat the following conditions:
1. Suicidal and Parasuicidal Behaviors
2. Borderline Personality Disorders
3. Substance Abuse Related Disorders
4. Binge Eating Disorder
5. Bulimia
6. Depression in the elderly
How does DBT® therapy differ from traditional therapy?
DBT® Therapy, or Dialectical Behavior Therapy® , is a structured, skills-based approach that goes beyond traditional talk therapy. While traditional therapy often focuses on exploring thoughts and feelings, DBT® helps you actively build tools to manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and handle stress in healthier ways. It’s especially helpful for people who feel overwhelmed by their emotions or struggle with impulsive behaviors. Through a combination of individual therapy, group skills training, and practical exercises, DBT® offers a clear, step-by-step path toward lasting emotional balance.
What will be taught during DBT® Skills groups?
DBT Skills classes are done in a group format and meet once a week, either in-person (at the offices of Mindfully-Montgomery or Mindfully-Anderson), or online using our HIPAA-compliant teletherapy software. The DBT Skills class is conducted in a psycho-educational format. Clients will learn Core Mindfulness Skills, Distress Tolerance Skills, Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills, and Emotional Regulation Skills. The function of skills training is to “enhance the client’s capabilities to change.”
Why do you need to already be seeing a therapist to be able to join the DBT® Skills Classes?
At Mindfully, our DBT® Skills classes are part of a fully-adherent DBT® program, which means they’re designed to work hand-in-hand with individual therapy. To get the most out of the DBT Skills group, participants are required to also attend weekly one-on-one therapy. That’s because individual therapy helps you apply the DBT® skills to your own life in real time, giving you the support and guidance needed to make lasting change.
Does your individual therapist need to be a "DBT® Therapist"?
No, you do not need to see a DBT® Therapist. Regardless of whether your existing therapist is a Mindfully counselor or an external therapist, we will ask you for a Release of Information (ROI) document.
The ROI form authorizes your therapist to share specific information with your DBT® Skills group facilitator.
This process helps ensure that your confidentiality is protected and that information is only shared with your informed consent.
What is the process to join one of the DBT® Skills groups?
When you first contact our Intake staff, after collecting your insurance information, they will schedule you with one of Mindfully’s DBT® therapists to complete a DBT® Assessment. This Assessment will also orient you to the DBT® Skills Groups. You will also be sent paperwork to complete, including a Release of Information form. The Mindfully DBT® Therapist will also assign you to one of the online groups if you will be participating in virtual skills groups.
Why DBT® Skills might not be right for you?
DBT® group therapy is a great space to build skills in an interactive environment with other people who are in similar situations to you. However, DBT Skills classes are not the right fit for everyone. If you are not currently seeing a therapist, this DBT® group therapy program may not be appropriate for you.
That’s okay! At Mindfully, we also offer expert individual DBT® therapy as well as regular one-on-one counseling to help you get the care you need. After attending at least five sessions with your therapist, they can refer you to join these DBT Skills groups if you and your therapist agree this is appropriate for your mental health journey.
We’re here to support you, wherever you are in your journey.

What To Expect from DBT Group Therapy
You will first be scheduled for an assessment with one of our DBT® therapists. This assessment typically takes 1 hour and is covered by insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare.
If you are considered a good fit for the program, you will be assigned to one of the DBT® Skills groups that meet in person at Mindfully Montgomery, Mindfully Anderson, or meet virtually using our HIPAA-compliant teletherapy conferencing tool.
If you commit to these classes, you will build new skills, connect with others, and enjoy a supportive, engaging experience.
