More About James (Jim) Canfield

Hi, I’m Jim. I’ve been part of the Mindfully team since 2018, but my journey as a therapist began long before that. I spent 20 years on active duty in the U.S. Army, where I supported soldiers and their families through challenges like deployment stress, family conflict, and trauma. My work also included counseling military sexual trauma (MST) survivors and, later, providing treatment for sex offenders at the military prison in Ft Leavenworth, KS. Those years instilled in me a deep respect for the courage it takes to seek help, as well as the importance of compassionate and straightforward care.

After retiring from the Army, I continued my service at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Cincinnati, where I worked for twelve years with veterans and their families. My focus there was on depression, anxiety, PTSD, and serious mental illness, both in clinical and community-based settings. Whether I was working with individuals, couples, or families, I saw how therapy could bring hope, strengthen relationships, and restore a sense of direction even in the most difficult circumstances.

At my age, I bring a personal understanding of the unique challenges that come with aging. Many of the people I work with are navigating retirement, caregiving responsibilities, or grief—and I know how important it is to have support during these transitions. Whether you’re a veteran, a family member, or someone simply trying to make sense of a new chapter in life, I’m here to walk with you toward healing, resilience, and peace of mind.
